安息香
Benzoin, also known as Styrax Benzoin or 2-Hydroxy-2-phenylacetophenone, is a colorless or white crystalline substance that is native to Guangxi, China. It is a special product with various uses in medicine, cosmetics, and polyester production.
Traditionally, benzoin has been renowned for its unique cultural significance. It is mentioned in ancient Chinese herbal texts such as the Tang Materia Medica and Compendium of Materia Medica, as well as the Xiang Pu, a book on fragrances. The descriptions highlight its resinous appearance, which is similar to walnut kernels, and its ability to produce various fragrances. Some even believed that burning benzoin could repel rats. The appearance of benzoin was described as purple-black with a yellow hue and a polished agate-like appearance. The highest quality benzoin was identified as white in color when ground.
According to historical documents, benzoin originated from ancient Central Asian regions such as the Anxi Kingdom, Kucha, Cao, and the Arabian Peninsula, as well as the Iranian Plateau. It was introduced to Tang and Song China under its old name. The Yu Yang Zazu, an ancient Chinese text, stated that benzoin came from Persia and was used as a medicinal material. The New Revised Materia Medica described benzoin as having a pungent taste, a pleasant fragrance, and being mild, non-toxic, and effective in treating abdominal discomfort.
Benzoin has been recognized for its various medicinal properties and applications. One use is for sudden chest pain, where benzoin is ground into powder and consumed with hot water in small amounts. It is also used in the treatment of abdominal pain in children. For this, benzoin is steamed to produce an ointment, and other ingredients such as agarwood, incense wood, cloves, kusnezoffii, and star anise are mixed to form pills. These pills are then consumed with Perilla leaf tea. Furthermore, benzoin can be used to alleviate joint pain. In this case, it is wrapped in thin slices of pig fat and heated until it produces smoke. The smoke is applied directly to the affected area, providing relief.
